Today I went for a hike at White Tanks Regional Park, outside of Phoenix. It is a nice park and worth the $6.00 admission fee. Better than going a movie, which cost more than $6.00 anyway, but I am not sure it is better than purchasing and eating a double "Jimmy Buffs" Italian style hotdog. That is always worth the price!

Best to go the park after a rain, that way there will be water in the tanks (depressions in the white granite) and the waterfall will be running. It is hot and the trails are open teh sun beats down pretty hard. Best to go early in the day. The trail to the falls is easy access and can even be made by someone in a wheel chair, at least part of the way.

Probally what I liked least about the park is that it is a County Park. Which means lots of rules and areas that you can't go. Of course I understand why access has to be limited. There has been a lot of destruction at the Park. People have vandalized the petrogylphs, even chipping off slabs of the rock to take and sell.
The petroglyphs were interesting. Not sure how old they are. Some are definitely pretty old, others look like people had tried to mimic the original carvings. And of course insensitive morons have carved their own initials in the rocks. Just they figured why not add their modern graffitti to the ancient graffitti.

Would I go back, definitely. It is close to home and the trails are good for hiking.

Camping at Upper Tonto Creek/Horton Creek Trail

We went camping and hiking for our anniversary. Camped at the Upper Tonto Creek Campground.
While we were camping we could not help, but think about the "Handcart Trek" that we coordinated the year before back in North Carolina. A lot has happened in that year. A close friend has passed away, others have moved, and Wayne Jr. is doing well in his fight against cancer.
We hiked up the Horton Creek Trail The next day. We did not get all the way up to the spring, but did manage to get about 2/3 of the way up. We had a great time!!
After we left the trail we went for a ride up the Mogolon Rim and to the Bear Flats portion of the Tonto Creek. Fishing was slow, but the day was just great.
On the way home we stopped off for a little 4 wheelin around Sugar Loaf Mountain.
It was great way to spend our 34th anniversary.

Camping at Tonto Creek and Hiking up Horton Creek

Went Camping at Tonto Creek in the late spring. Had a great time, but had a little close encounter with a "rooster tail".

Four Wheelin in Phoenix

Today I went to the trails up by Pleasant Lake outside of Phoenix. The trails were very good. They started out plain and bumpy and then got challenging for a full size vehicle.

This one I nicknamed the coffee-grinder. It was a very tight squeeze for the wrangler!

Hiked up Squaw Peak in Phoenix yesterday. The weather was great and the cacti were starting to flower. One day I hope to be able to run up the trail. Right now I am happy that I can walk up!

More Pictures from the trip to Arizona

Sunday, March 8, 2009

On the second day of the trip. I stopped at the Federal Building Memorial in Oklahoma City. It was a very sobering experience.

Just drove from NC to Arizona. It was a great trip. Although two and a half days in a Jeep Wrangler can wear you out a bit. The best part was driving through the South West. Stopped at the Petrified Forest on the way out. It was worth it!
